Is bespoke right for me?

How do you know if bespoke is right for you?

Bespoke jewellery is more than just "buying a ring or necklace", it’s commissioning a piece of art that’s designed and crafted specifically for you. It’s a collaboration between you and your maker, built on trust, respect, and a shared vision.

But bespoke isn’t for everyone and that’s okay.

Here’s how to know if it’s the right path for you.

1. You Value Original Design

Bespoke work is about creating something unique, not replicating a cheap design you saw online. Your piece will reflect your ideas, your story, and the maker’s style. This is why most jewellers (myself included) won’t copy another maker’s work, it’s both a matter of ethics and respect for the craft.

2. You Understand the Investment

Custom jewellery is handcrafted using quality materials, often gold, platinum, and ethically sourced gemstones.
That means the price reflects:

  • The value of the materials.

  • The hours of skilled labour.

  • Years (or decades) of training and experience.

For example, my bespoke solid gold engagement or wedding rings start at €1,800–€2,000, and remodels begin at €500–€800. This isn’t “markup”, it’s the true cost of quality, handmade work.

3. You Respect Your Maker’s Time and Skill

When you work with an independent maker, you’re often dealing with a one-person studio, someone designing, sourcing materials, making, finishing, packaging, emailing, bookkeeping… all while keeping the creative spark alive.

Respect in this process looks like:

  • Being realistic about your budget.

  • Understanding that thoughtful design takes time.

  • Trusting your maker’s expertise on what will (and won’t) work for your piece.

4. You Can Wait for the Right Piece

Bespoke jewellery can take anywhere from 3 to 12 weeks, sometimes longer during busy seasons. This is because every detail is made to order, not pulled from a shelf. If you’re looking for something tomorrow, bespoke may not be the right fit.

5. You Want Something Made to Last a Lifetime

When you commission bespoke work, you’re not buying disposable fashion jewellery, you’re investing in a piece designed to be worn, loved, and passed on. It’s jewellery with meaning, designed to become part of your story.

In Short:
If you’re looking for a one of a kind piece, understand the value behind the price, and respect the time, artistry, and skill involved, then bespoke jewellery could be one of the most rewarding purchases you ever make.

It’s not just about what you wear, it’s about the relationship between you, your jewellery, and the person who made it.
